11 Jun Hi honey how was your day?
I imagine “Hi honey how was your day?” is one of the most commonly asked questions in an evening the world over.I also imagine the answer to this question can then set the scene for that evenings dynamic not only for that individual but also for the rest of the persons family and friends. I am sure the ambiance after an answer of “great I accomplished so much and I love going to work” will set a far better tone for the evening than “what a shit of a day nobody seems to appreciate what I do”.
Hence my recent management revelation…….. as managers of people I believe we control the quality of a staff members drive home.
It should be our aim to make sure that each staff member has the most comforting drive home possible. It is our responsibility that we give them the best possible chance to answer the “Hi Honey” question with the best possible answer that will ensure that our staff member has the best possible time off with their family and friends.
In a recent organisation survey conducted with my staff, respondents were asked to choose their top 4 reasons for continuing to work with us, here is what was said:
- The work I do is interesting and rewarding
- The team of people I work with
- Flexible hours
- Able to use my initiative in the way I do my job
- Development opportunities
- The money I am paid
- Work conditions and benefits
- My supervisor/ manager is good to work with
- Location/ ease of access to work place
In comparison to other companies encompassing 20,000 respondents to this survey, these reasons are consistent. Please note pay, benefits and work place rated 6th, 7th and 9th in importance.
So if you are committed to my theory of ensuring your staff have the best drive home, just look at the list above and ensure your staff have lots of opportunity to feel useful and flourish. Both of you will be better for it not to mention the effect it will have on your friends and family.
